First discovered in 1957, Coenzyme Q10 has been the subject of over 5,000 studies.  Coenzyme Q10 is best known as the nutrient that is critical in the production of energy within our body's cells.   This property of supporting energy production is what makes Coenzyme Q10 a key factor in improving athletic endurance and in protecting our body's most important muscle, our heart!  Coenzyme Q10 also functions as an antioxidant, which protects the body from free radicals and thus helps to reduce many of the signs of aging.

If you or anyone that you know is currently taking or previously has taken a statin drug, it is absolutely necessary that those individuals take a coenzme Q10 supplement!  Why? Because the pathway that statin drugs use to lower cholesterol levels affects the same pathway the body uses to produce coenzyme Q10.  Therefore statin drugs decrease the body's coenzyme Q10 levels.  Research has shown that long term depletion of coenzyme Q10 can be a source of heart failure!

Coenzyme Q10 is found primarily in fish, organ meats and in the germ portion of whole grains.  Coenzyme Q10, formally known as ubiquinone, cannot be fully utilized until the body converts it to the active form ubiquinol.  Research has indicated that as early as our mid 20s, our ability to convert ubiquinone to ubiquinol decreases.   Therefore when it comes to supplementation, if one is older than 25, he should supplement with the active form ubiquinol.
